New England Coalition for Sustainable Population

Our mission is to raise awareness in New England of local, regional, and global population, consumption, and sustainability issues, and to strengthen regional action on these issues.

Everyday, the planet Earth is asked to
provide for 200,000 more people -- that's
births minus deaths. Click on the world

is happening.

One of NECSP's major policy goals is to
reduce global total fertility rates from their
current 2.56 to replacement levels of 2.1.
One of our major strategies to do so is the
economic empowerment and liberation of
women worldwide. One emerging tactic to do
so is called "micro-lending".
You -- an individual -- can lend to
entrepreneurs in developing countries
(where TFR's are often above replacement
level), in order to help them get small
businesses going. Vibrant economies tend to
reduce TFR's.

In the spirit of "think globally, act locally"
NECSP encourages all sustainable
population advocates to do what they can to
understand the human ecology of their own
area.
For us, this means understanding the New
England region. The US Census Bureau
estimates that the New England Region's
population grew by 2.28% from the year
2000 to 2005. Population is estimated to
have increased from 13,922,517 to
14,239,724.

New Englanders are coming together around the
idea of sustainable population, because they know
real sustainability is only possible by halting human
population growth.
