New England Coalition for Sustainable Population
|
There is no sustainable development without
stabilized population.
At our core, we are sustainable development advocates -- but
our focus is in bringing attention to the need for stabilizing
human population.
Other leaders concentrate on lowering carbon emissions,
preserving habitat, or reducing toxins in economic supply
chains -- efforts we all support.
However, the United Nations projects a world population of
9.2 billion by 2050.
This is a best case scenario though -- assuming dramatic
declines in global fertility rates. If rates remain unchanged
from today, the planet will be asked to support a world
population of nearly 12 billion people by 2050 -- a 75%
increase.
If you believe in good stewardship of the Earth, it is
impossible to accept that a 75% increase in human beings is
going to make the Earth or our community of nations any
better off.
We offer a vision of New England, the United States and the
Earth enjoying a stabilized human population, healthy
economic activities and a high quality of life for all.
Our mission is to raise awareness in New England of regional, national and global population and sustainability issues, and to strengthen regional action on these issues.
