- Worldwide, 380 women become pregnant every
minute -- half of them do not plan or wish the
pregnancy.
- Over 100 million women in developing countries would
prefer to avoid pregnancy but are not using any form
of family planning or birth control.
- Over 24 developing nations still have fertility rates
(average number of children per woman) of 6.0 or
higher -- while another 24 have fertility rates of 5.0-
5.9.
- The U.S. average fertility rose to 2.13 births per
woman in 2007 – the highest rate in a generation. In
1976 fertility had fallen to 1.7. This means in 22
years the fertility rate has increased 25% in the U.S.
- In the U.S. 32% of married women do not use modern
family planning methods.
- Of the 6.4 million pregnancies in the United States in
2001, half (49%) were unintended. Most unintended
pregnancies could be prevented with consistent,
correct use of modern contraceptives.
- Each year, almost 750,000 teenage women in the U.
S. aged 15–19 become pregnant. This equals over
2000 pregnancies per day.
- In the six states of New England there were 168,466
births in 2005 – or about 461 births per day. 10,978
of these were teen births – or about 30 teen births
per day.

call to action. We are faced with the
possibility of global bankruptcy. There
is no single action that brings more
immediate results than investing in the
education of women. Morality
becomes hypocrisy if it means
accepting the misery of women and
children worldwide. We must be
responsible towards future
generations. The Cairo Programme of
Action must be successful for earth's
sake and for humanity's sake"
