New England Coalition for Sustainable Population
Grassroots educational outreach is very important to us. We know there is no shortage of
New England citizens who want to learn more about how they can contribute to sustainable
development and raise awareness about the role stabilizing human population will play in
those efforts.

If you have an event you would like us to attend,
please let us know.

Here are some of our grassroots and other activities from 2007:
Earth Day, Keene NH
NECSP tabled in downtown Keene NH on April 21 as part of the Earth Day celebration organized by Antioch
University New England. Sharing the central square area of Keene, (a regional city of 22,000 people) with 20
other sustainability educators, NECSP raised awareness of population pressures on the Earth’s ecosystems with
literature, information and dialouge. Of the over 50 people we spoke to, more than half did not know that there
are 200,000 more people added to the planet everyday.

Solarfest, UNH Durham
NECSP tabled at the University of New Hampshire, Durham on April 22. Befitting its status as one of higher
education’s sustainability leaders, the University of New Hampshire marked Earth Day 2007 with two days of
celebratory events. NECSP was invited to the popular UNH Solar Fest, which featured a day of solar-powered
music as well as food, service and activism. We made contacts with motivated students and faculty, and added 20
of them to our email network.

Solarfest Tinmouth VT
NECSP tabled at the 12th annual Solarfest in Tinmouth VT on July 14th and 15th. Solarfest blends art, education,
and grassroots activism to inspire the conservation of Earth's limited resources, to promote renewable energy,
and to support the creation of sustainable communities. NECSP spoke with scores of people, handed out
information and signed up over 30 people to join our email network.

Co-Organize Population Strategy Meeting in Washington DC
Throughout the late summer and early fall of 2007, NECSP staff member Joe Bish collaborated with the
Population Media Center (based in Shelburne VT) to organize an intense, day-long summit of the most prominent
population advocacy organizations in the United States.

Dubbed the “Population Strategy Meeting”, the event was held on October 2nd at the Carnegie Endowment for
International Peace in Washington DC. Twenty-six major population advocacy organizations from both the United
States and England were in attendance -- joined by nine prominent individual population activists. These 35
representatives have created a working alliance known as the “Population Strategy Working Group”.

Guided by the vision originally proposed by NECSP, “To lay the strategic groundwork for a comprehensive and
collaborative effort to bring about positive action and leadership from governments, donor agencies, the media
and the public on the issues of global and domestic human population expansion,” the working group includes
such organizations as The Population Institute, The Global Footprint Network, World Population Balance, The
Population Press and The Population Resource Center. Efforts by this working group are ongoing, and with
NECSP’s leadership, are expected to bear fruit in the form of a national public education campiagn in 2008.

NECSP Staff attends Population Connection’s Education Training
On July 28th and 29th, NECSP staff successfully completed Population Connection’s Leadership Institute in
Washington DC. Since 1975, this program has provided training and assistance to tens of thousands of
population educators throughout the United States, Canada, and around the world. These highly regarded
population education workshops prepare the next generation for responsible global citizenship in the twenty-first
century. NECSP staff is now qualified to replicate these trainings across New England.

Ed Hartman tour
From October 5th to October 17th, NECSP sponsored lectures by Edward C. Hartman, author of The Population
Fix, at 11 different New England locations. Audience size varied from 5 to 40, and NECSP is proud to have
provided this opportunity for so many to educate themselves about the problems of the United State’s continued
population growth. You can see more information about Ed Hartman by visiting his website: http://www.

One Voice Summit
In April of 2007, NECSP staff took part in delivering an urgent message to Congressional members on The Hill
about issues related to population and the environment.   This four-day event of grassroots organizing, training,
and advocacy was organized by Population Connection, in partnership with The Sierra Club, Advocates for Youth,
and Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States   (SIECUS).  The event included 115 activist
participants, representing 23 states, who visited over 100 congressional offices.   Activists represented support
for a broad range of both international and domestic family planning issues, including environmental, sexual, and
reproductive health messages.  In addition Congress was strongly urged to create federal funding for
comprehensive sexuality education, while eradicating abstinence-only-until-marriage programs. Efforts were also
made to articulate and discuss the various connections between the issues of human population growth and
climate change.

Panel Discussion: Population, Global Health and the Environment: Solutions for a More Sustainable
Future
NECSP, in partnership with The Sierra Club, Izaak Walton League of America, and the Center for Environment
and Population, organized a panel discussion on September 20, 2007 at Antioch University New England in
Keene, NH.   This discussion featured speaker Tom Wessels, author of "The Myth of Progress", who examined
the scientific and natural limits to growth as they relate to human population expansion and consumptive
patterns.   Over 30 students and community participants contributed to the dialogue connecting population and
the environment, including the examination of political solutions to global poverty and reproductive health rights of
women.   In addition, through the planning of a locally grown and organic meal, NECSP staff was successful at
creating a zero waste event, while tying population issues to the importance of waste reduction and supporting
local food economies.

Film Screening: What A Way To Go: Life at the End of Empire
In August, NECSP and volunteers orchestrated a screening of the film "What A Way To Go: Life at the End of
Empire", a documentary examining the links among human population growth, species extinction, peak oil, and
climate change.   There were over 60 community members in attendance, over 50% of whom stayed after the
viewing to discuss issues relevant to population growth.  This event was a successful attempt at educating and
stimulating dialogue among community members around the issues of population and the environment.

Keene Sentinel Editorial Board Meeting
NECSP Board members and staff recognize the importance of media outreach in actualizing the organization's
mission to increase awareness throughout New England about population issues.   In an effort to develop lasting
partnerships with media outlets, NECSP organized and held an editorial board meeting with members of the
Keene Sentinel staff.   This meeting will serve as a model for similar meetings with other New England publications
throughout the upcoming year in order to increase media coverage of population growth issues.
