Domestic Programs Print E-mail

At our current levels of financial support, NECSP is able to offer one program at the domestic level. As we develop and gain further support – and as the idea of sustainable population begins to capture the popular imagination – we expect to add more domestic programs. If you have ideas or suggestions about programs that we should be offering, please contact us.

Presidential Adviser
With your help, exponential population growth can be stopped -- both at home and abroad. In addition to the dedicated efforts of so many admirable non-governmental organizations around the world who are already working to accomplish this basic sustainability goal, we need a full time effort coming from Washington DC.

We need your help. Click here to sign a petition urging the creation of a Cabinet Level Population and Sustainability Advisor to the US President. You can also visit our Act Domestically page and write your Senator to urge them to institute this office.

What’s at stake is nothing less than this: the livability of our planet both for ourselves and the miraculous array of species with which we share it. The future is too precious to trade away for a lack of common sense or fear of ideological and political confrontations. Please act today.

Background
The primary focus of an Office of Special Assistant to the President for Population and Sustainability Issues would be the development of a global strategy for achieving population stabilization and sustainable development worldwide – because one can’t happen without the other. Immediate objectives the for office would be:

  1. Compile information to create a shared understanding of the human population impact on the environment on which humanity relies for its survival.
  2. Develop an Administration position as to whether U.S. and global population growth is desirable or not.

Once a position is established, the office would be charged with proposing actions and policies to pursue that decision. This would include promoting development of both domestic policies and the policies of governments around the world with regard to population, family planning, climate change, and other elements of global sustainability.

Second, the office would examine other policy proposals that come to the President to evaluate whether they help or hinder the pursuit of that position. This role would enable the office to intervene in key national debates – for example: foreign assistance policies, global warming, immigration policy, or labor policy.
